Winchester, VA – The Telegraph is reporting that North Korea is banning fun in the wake of continued international crackdown over its nuclear weapons program. The South Korean news agency Yonhap revealed that during a closed-door briefing to South Korean parliamentarians by their National Intelligence Bureau yesterday, a new  system was described as already in place in North Korea whereby  “party organs report people’s economic hardships on a daily basis, and it has banned any gatherings related to drinking, singing and other entertainment.” Also now banned is the November state holiday of appreciation for mothers as “amazing teachers and guides of the nation.” The holiday had become so popular that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could not take he competition, so now, any messages on flowers or bouquets are only allowed to contain words of love or loyalty to Kim Jong Un. It’s not just mothers who are getting the short end of the stick in North Korea. It is all women, according to a United Nations human rights panel yesterday. The Independent reports that the human rights panel decried the deprivation of women of an education, job opportunities, and supports for women who find themselves in situations of domestic abuse. The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women also spoke out against reports of rape and mistreatment of women in detention. Their report described North Korea’s lessening of the punishment inflicted upon perpetrators of rape, reducing the sentence from 4 years to 3 years. It also described the not-uncommon situation of North Korean women trafficked abroad, and then returned to North Korea, only to face charges of “illegal border crossing.” These women are then sent to labour training camps and prisons, and are subject to sexual abuse by the officials, and subsequent forced abortions. What a truly terrible situation.
