Winchester, VA – The New York Times is reporting that come June, women in Saudi Arabia will be legally allowed to drive, and not only can they get their driver’s licenses, but they will not need the permission of their husbands, fathers, or male guardians to do so. This change was announced on state television by a royal decree and there was a simultaneous media event which took place in Washington. Saudi Arabia hopes that this move will not only boost their reputation in the international community, but that it will boost the numbers of women in the workplace. As of now, women with jobs either spend money on drivers to get to work, or they have male family members bring them to work. Women have been protesting the ban on female driving in Saudi Arabia since 1990. Congratulations. It’s about time.
