Winchester, VA – Swedish freelance journalist Peter Imanuelson reports that on Friday, a Home Education Bill petitioned by the Labour Party passed the second stage in the House of Lords. This bill will severely restrict homeschooling in the United Kingdom. An article ran in the Telegraph on Friday which explained that homeschooling in the UK is already on the rise, and the end of sex segregation in schools might result in a rise in radicalization among children, whose parents would turn to homeschooling rather than put their children in a mixed-sex classroom. Colin Diamond, corporate director for children and young peoPle in the Birmingham city council declared that home-educated children are far more likely to be exposed to extremist ideologies than children in mainstream schools. Diamond says that the “biggest risk” of exposing children to “any form of non-mainstream societal values” occurs when those children are educated in unregulated settings, such as, in his words,  “at home, because you are not part of the social group, or if you are in an independent school that is at the margins of things, or if you are in the unregulated space, which includes Sunday schools…..madrasas, all these places where there is no regulation whatsoever.” Diamond was at the forefront of helping Birmingham schools recover in 2015 when a group of hardline Muslims were orchestrating a plot to promote Islamist teaching in schools. Lord Agnew, the schools minister, announced on Friday that the Government is seeking to strengthen guidance for local authorities and parents on homeschooling. This guidance, he said during a Private Members Bill in the House of Lords on homeschooling, will clarify the action local authorities can take if they deem children are not receiving a “safe and suitable” education.  This should alarm all homeschoolers, not just Muslim homeschoolers.
