Winchester, VA – The National Catholic Register is reporting that Libero Milone, the Vatican’s Auditor General, resigned abruptly yesterday. The Vatican issued a statement which said the resignation occurred “by mutual agreement” but gave no reason as to why it occurred. Just three months ago, Milone indicated that he was very satisfied with his job, had no regrets in accepting it, and was prepared to go “all the way with great enthusiasm.” It is rumored that he experienced increasing resistance to more in-depth audits which he sought, especially from the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. The search for his replacement will begin “as soon as possible.”
