Winchester, VA – Yesterday, for the first time in 99 years, darkness swept across the United States as a solar eclipse made its way from the west coast to the east coast. The first viewers of the spectacle were in Oregon, who saw it at just after 9am Pacific time. The Daily Mail reported that it took about 90 minutes for the next 14 states in the eclipse’s direct path to experience “totality,” or the complete covering of the sun by the moon. The other states to some degree experienced partial eclipses. The longest moment of totality occurred at Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, which got a whopping 2 minutes and 44 seconds of darkness. The First Family watched the eclipse from their balcony and for a brief moment the President took off his special viewing glasses to watch the eclipse’s peak, until an aide told him to put the glasses back on. The next North American eclipse is due in April, 2024.
