COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLWT5) —

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of a planned meeting with President Donald Trump.

DeWine, 73, took a test for COVID-19 as part of the standard protocol to greet Trump on the tarmac at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland.
“A big surprise to me and certainly a big surprise to our family,” DeWine said at a late afternoon news conference broadcast from his porch on his farm in Cedarville in southwestern Ohio, where he plans to quarantine for 14 days.

DeWine said he and his wife Fran both are showing no symptoms. Both took an additional test upon their return home, and are awaiting those test results.

“I feel fine. I have a headache, but I get a lot of headaches,” the governor said.

DeWine said he considers himself healthy, and aside from having asthma, he nor Fran have any pre-existing conditions.

“The lesson that should come from this is that we’re all human, this virus is everywhere and this virus is very tough,” DeWine said. “And yes you can contract it even if wearing a mask.” The governor said “the odds are dramatically better” of avoiding a positive test if people wear a mask.

DeWine said he is unclear how and where he caught the virus, saying that both he and Fran have been very careful when out in public and have drastically limited their social circle.

When asked about the possibility of a false negative test, the governor said, “The testing is evolving. We’re not going to pre-judge what happens. I’m sort of hoping that it was a false test, but I certainly don’t assume that. I assume it was a correct test, but we’ll see and when I get my results back and Fran gets her results back, we’ll certainly share those with everybody.”

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted also took the COVID-19 test Thursday as part of the protocol to greet the president. Husted tested negative.

The governor said he expects Husted to take a more visible role at daily coronavirus briefings, but added he still plans to be involved – in some shape or form – while working from home.

DeWine becomes the second U.S. governor to test positive for coronavirus after Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt announced he contracted the virus last month.

In recent weeks, DeWine has pleaded with Ohioans to take personal responsibility over the virus’ spread across the state. He had resisted a statewide mask mandate until July 23 when the number of daily cases in the state began to push over 1,000.

Upon landing in Cleveland Thursday, President Trump said he wishes the governor the best in his recovery.

“A very good friend of mine just tested positive. Do you know that? Our great governor. We want to wish him the best. He’ll be fine. I guess he’s going to get a secondary test. He’s a great guy. He’s done a fantastic job,” the president said.

Sen. Rob Portman also weighed in, saying in part, “Jane and I were saddened to hear that Governor DeWine tested positive for COVID-19. We are hopeful that he will continue to have no symptoms and send our best wishes for a speedy recovery. I spoke with him yesterday about the ongoing COVID-19 response at the federal and state level and I’m certain he’ll continue to lead a strong and safe reopening of Ohio while following the proper protocols and quarantining at home in Cedarville. I hope everyone will support his recovery by continuing to do their part to slow the spread by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. I will continue to work closely with him to support our health care system, our schools, our local governments, our employers, and all Ohio families during the ongoing pandemic.”

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper issued a statement which reads, “We are saddened to hear of Gov. Mike DeWine’s test result. We know how hard he’s been working to keep Ohioans safe, and this is just one more reminder that this virus can impact everyone. As fellow Ohioans, we stand with and support our governor and his family at this time.”
